We are in a global marketplace...

...and there are massive opportunities to be gained through working with customers, suppliers and partners overseas.

This Rise and Design will feature local companies who have taken that plunge and who are now operating globally and reaping the rewards. There will also be an opportunity to meet some of the advisors from UK Trade and Industry who can offer practical help and guidance.

Speakers include -

Mark Wells, Xenophya

Xenophya are a team of motorcycle designers based in Cramlington, who have been working with an Indian company to design and develop a new range of motorcycles specifically for that market. Mark will describe some of the challenges they’ve faced and the successes they’ve achieved.

Steve Vipond, Bigto Design

‘Four countries, three continents and one water cooler!’

Steve gives some insights into how working for a Canadian company, that manufactures in China for a huge US chain, is not as difficult as it may sound.’

Paul Alderson, Wonderstuff Studios

Their passion is developing brands through clear, ideas-led design. Paul will describe some recent projects for clients looking to break into markets in the Far East.

Simon Johnson, Ameeca
Ameeca uses state-of-the-art technology to create electronic educational devices that make learning interesting and fun for children. The company has designed MP3 headsets called ‘Storyphones’, which will give children access to audio resources to develop their listening and language skills.

Barry Nicholson, Creative Services Team, UKTI

Barry and his team work with designers from all disciplines to explore opportunities overseas, and to source UK designers or overseas customers. He will describe some recent projects and give an overview of the help that is available.

About Rise & Design

Design Network North members meet on the second Friday of each month to share good practice, learn from experts and to collaborate on issues, projects and needs.

Each meeting has a specific theme and will feature presentations from experts in the field. You will also be able to discuss with other companies how applying these ideas could make a difference to your business.

This is also a great opportunity to raise any ideas or issues that you would like to see feature in future Design Network North activities.

Design Network North

Design Network North supports innovative companies, helping them to utilise high quality design skills and processes.

We accomplish this by offering specialised product design, industrial design and new product development support.

Good design is the key to future competitiveness. At a time when product quality standards are universally high and costs have been driven relentlessly downward, design and improved functionality have become the most important factors in the marketplace.

Intended to enhance regional companies’ ability to employ high-quality design, skills and processes, Design Network North works closely with other regional, national and international design projects, and helps those without access to the relevant design skills, achieve their aspirations for growth. Design Network North also holds regular networking events, 'Rise & Design', and delivers onsite Design Performance Workshops to embed good design within your business.

The Northern Design Centre will form a regional focal point for use of design by North East England’s businesses and service providers. Throughout each year, the design centre will feature work not just from local product designers but examples from all areas of design.

Funded by Gateshead Council and the European Regional Development Fund, the network is co-ordinated by RTC North Ltd in Sunderland.
